Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (Dir. Jay Roach, 1997)
“Throw me a friggin bone here.” It’s a sci-fi! And I thought I was just going to sit down and watch a hilarious comedy. It probably had been about ten years since I’d seen this film and it is still funny. Or maybe funnier? I’m not sure. I did like it when I was much younger. So this is probably the funniest science fiction film made to date. Correct me if I am wrong anyway, but this one gets my vote.
I know that one would first classify this as comedy, but there is no denying the sci-fi plot. Austin Powers and his evil nemesis Dr. Evil are cryogenically frozen in the 1960’s and then thawed in the 1990’s. Now Austin, 30 years later, still has to stop Dr. Evil from taking over the world… for 1 million dollars… er hum… 100 million dollars. Muhahaha. Ok, I am not funny, never have been, but the movie is so quotable! The future is not quite ready for this international man of mystery who still professes the ideals of the sixties. But Austin Danger Powers takes the future by storm.
He teams up with Vanessa Kensington to stop Dr. Evil. To defeat him, Austin must sneak into his lair, work his mojo on sexy Fembots, Robots who cannot resist Austin’s charm, and prevents nuclear catastrophe though not Dr. Evil, which leaves room for the following sequels.
I am looking forward to rewatching the sequels, especially to see Tom Cruise in Goldmember. I really don’t remember him in it, so it is time I check it out.
Words can’t do justice to how funny this is, so please, watch it for yourself and enjoy!
