I’m starting to read The Purpose Driven Life. That means that I dedicated the next 40 days to discovering more of God’s purpose in my life. Summer sounds like a great time to start. I want to take this seriously and do it every single day. I’m not sure if I can, but I want to try. I promise to honestly try to read one chapter a day and reflect on it for the next 40 days. God, reveal yourself to me in your plans for my life while reading this book. And let’s begin now. I’m doing this without a partner, but I have people to talk about the book with. Bible study will be a good time to share the insights. I’m going to sign this commitment.
Reflecting chapter 1: P.D.L.
Points
- It’s not about me
- you can’t find the purpose of your life by looking inside yourself because we are not our own creators
- God planned a purpose for us before we were born
- you can reach all your personal goals, become a raving success by the world’s standards, and still miss the purpose for which God created you
- instead of speculating about meaning find it through Revelation in the Bible
- God is the source of life
- you don’t get to choose your purpose
- without God life makes no sense
I don’t like the reflective question given by the book and don’t feel like answering it. But to reflect, hmmm. I was created by God, for God. He gives me purpose. So it’s not about me, it’s about living for the purpose God created me for. He planned this before I was born. I don’t have to live according to his purpose, but if I don’t my life will lack purpose. I can’t find purpose apart from God, but I can be successful without him. If I focus on myself I can achieve my goals, but I can’t make up a new purpose for myself. Why not? Because I was created for something else. I obviously didn’t create myself. If I created myself I suppose I could create my own purpose, because then I would be my own God. But I’m not. This makes a lot of sense. If God didn’t create me for a purpose could I make my own purpose in life? The answer seems like no because if God didn’t deal a purpose then our lives will be purposeless regardless of what we believe is the purpose. Or God would generously allow our beliefs to become the purpose. That doesn’t really matter though because he did create us for a purpose. Exactly what that purpose is I hope you God will reveal in the following days because I really do want to live my life according to your purpose.
