All right, I just got out of philosophy class and I have some things I need to think out. A charge against Christianity calls to attention some moral issues in the Old Testament. Augustine explains that there can be a change in things like marriage (Manichees used polygamy (married to more than one spouse) which the church formerly accepted but now they only accept single marriages).  Augustine said that God has his unchanging absolute truth on things like fidelity but times change. One must still be faithful in marriage, but now marriage has new definitions.

Right now, Augustine’s proposal is unconvincing, here’s why. Currently there is a huge issue with homosexual marriage. Some states even allow it. I believe in the future, that that homosexual marriage will be a totally acceptable thing, as common as polygamy was or single spouses are now. Then fidelity and homosexuality would make it all right. But God clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. ( The marriage may not be though, I’m not sure).  Now it is also believed in the church that polygamy was a sin. My argument isn’t working out. Not yet anyway… Does God’s view of what is sin change with the times? No, God is by definition unchanging, and so are his laws. Augustine notes this. But polygamy has changed in the church’s view from being acceptable to being a sin. How could God change his mind like that? He couldn’t, either it was always a sin or it was never a sin. I don’t think the fidelity part Augustine is focusing on its relevant. No I still haven’t addressed Augustine’s point. God’s rules don’t change. So fidelity, being his rule, is always there, but do we have people and society change how we view fidelity? Yes, that is clear from polygamy to the single spouse. Since we change fidelity changes with us to fit our times? No, can’t be, because fidelity can’t change if it is established by an unchanging God. He must have set things that are right and wrong from the beginning

I’m running in circles and about to give up. Augustine’s proposal just isn’t sitting with me though.  It doesn’t work.
