“It’s not about being a good cellist, it’s about having a good time playing the cello” from the TV show “Homicide”
I like this quote and I don’t. See, I play the drums and I love it very much, but I want to be really good. I have fun playing them but I am also working towards the goal. I don’t think they would be much fun if I never got better, but I don’t think you can play them repeatedly and not get better.
Another joy that comes from playing the drums is the thought that someday I’ll get good enough to play in a band or for church or something. Then I can share my talents with the world and that is satisfactory way. But the drumming will still be fun.
Of course, every time I play my drums I’m not having a blast. There are times that I would rather be doing something else, so when I’m done I’m glad I did it.
So this quote, anyway, is a metaphor about life. So life’s not about being the best, it’s about having a good time. I agree and disagree. They don’t go hand in hand. If you are doing what makes you happiest ( not fake or socially happy / content) but if you are doing what you love that should lead to being the best, most complete person. That seems like the best form of success. But unfortunately success is viewed differently by the world. Success would be how much you accomplished, not if you become a complete person. The accomplishments go along with being complete, making this few partially true, accomplishments don’t make one complete, it’s the other way around.
