(Not to be confused with Wander, which is a google maps based experience where you can travel to almost any location on earth in VR)
This is one of the most fantastic looking games I have played in VR. It is up there with Half Life: Alyx. The game was designed in the Unreal Engine and the art direction is 100% fantastic. I spent an hour and a half in the game mostly just looking around.
I am not very good at puzzle games which makes these difficult for me to play. However, Wanderer does a good job giving clues, so I was able to make it out of the first set, which is something that looks like a strange nuclear power plant or possibly a time travel portal. I found my way outside and discovered I was in Boston in 2061. This part of Boston was half underwater. I made my way to a boat and was introduced to the plot by a helpful character (who was full of personality): I was to make my way to my Grandpa’s house where he left some helpful objects for me.
As we made our voyage to my Grandpa’s apartment on the now underwater streets / canals of Boston, we encountered masked characters who had human form, but seemed to think they were a different species or type of person than our human characters. They yelled at us for trespassing.
I had to fight off two crocodiles with a bat but once I did that, we made it safely to the apartment. There I found a talking watch with intriguing settings – soon it seems I would be able to time travel. I searched the apartment and found a poster where Russians were the first to land on the Moon.
I was supposed to find a way to get power to the apartment, but this puzzle was beyond my skill level. I realized I needed a battery for the power tools, and I found solutions to many other puzzles, but I was not able to get the power tools working as I could not locate a battery. So, I had to save the game there.
This game immersed me completely in the world and did a good job simplifying the story so that a person who is admittedly terrible at puzzle games is still able to enjoy the story and move forward. The controls are fantastic and it is very easy to navigate through the world. Now if only I were better able to solve puzzles. I spent too much time looking at all the posters and fabulous art direction!
I highly recommend this game. Check out the beautiful art here: https://www.wanderervr.com/
