Wolves in the Walls, Chapter 1

This is one of my favorite VR narratives. It’s based on a Neil Gaimen book and the animation is just what you would want for a Neil Gaimen story. It’s gorgeous!

You start off with a credit sequence where you are able to grab a flashlight and illuminate different credits. Then, the story starts. Lucy, the protagonist and also a very impressive AI combined with human voice acting, draws you into existence. After she gets her drawing just right, you come to life and she tells you all about how she has been hearing things.

She needs your help to get proof of what she is hearing. So Lucy hands you a camera and asks you to photograph the walls. Lucy shows you all of her drawings on the walls when she turns out the light. When I took the photo, Lucy reacted to it and found evidence of a wolf!

She takes the photo to her Mother, who is in the kitchen making jam. This is a very fun environment with lots going on. You get the job of labeling jam and putting it on the shelf, but as you put jam on the shelf, it disappears. Lucy tries to get her Mom to believe her about the wolves, but her Mom is too busy.

There are so many great scenes in Chapter 1. I won’t spoil everything, but you get to make potions, play a video game inside the video game and more.

The story sets you up to know that “Everyone knows that when wolves come out of the walls, it’s over”. Lucy is determined to find out what that means.

Technical Specs:

3-D Animation – Really good 3-D animation!

I chose a stationary boundary, so I am not actually sure if this is 6 Degrees of Freedom (where you can walk around anywhere) or 3 Degrees of Freedom.

Interactive – you pick up objects in the environment

Your choices affect the narrative at parts, so this is somewhat a branching narrative.
