“Past Prologue” Ep. 3 Deep Space Nine- Quick thoughts
A Bajorn terrorist, Tahna Los, is rescued from the attacking Cardassians and brought aboard DS9. Tahna Los is a member of the resistance or terrorist group Kohn-Ma, which Kira was once a part of. Tahna Los questions her loyalty to Bajor, and Kira is now torn between her new duties to starfleet as Bajoran Militia officer and her old/ continuing fight for Bajor, whose clear enemy is the Cardassians. Kira recalls how she committed many crimes against the Cardassians in the war for their independence, back when things were black and white. Now, with the Federation, things are not so simple. Tahna sees the FEderation as simply a new occupation, destroying the independence that the Bajorans fought so hard for.
One of my favorite parts of the episode is when Sisko pushes Kira saying that he has no room for divided loyalties. And Kira makes herself clear, her loyalties are to Bajor. It is shocking to see a major put the commander in his place. She is not one who will listen to all his commands. She is someone who will continue to fight for the best interest of Bajor, and will turn against the Federation if necessary for her people. And there is nothing Sisko can do about that, except work to earn her respect.
The terrorist has planes to destroy the wormhole so that Bajor will be left alone and not become a major player in the universe market for commerce and travel. Kira comes to accept that this is a backwards fight, and not in the interest of Bajor, though this is very difficult for her. She was so much like Tahna Los in her past. And in a way, she longs to go back to the time when her choices were simpler, when she knew what she was fighting for.
Also, in this episode we meet Garak, who I hear is awesome. I certainly loved Bashir in this episode. He is so naive and excitable. He wants a part in the action but as soon as he is given that part, he squirms and tries to hide. His arrogance but also his lack of experience make him super cute. I look forward to seeing more of him.
